My vote: unless you plan to work for a company that has a known software preference use blender. Used to be maya was the best at animating (rigging/keyframe), c4d has paint shop, blender was free, 3ds was the modeling app, zb sculpting but now most of these apps do it all so you can't go wrong but blender being free and constantly advanced is appealing especially since the others have the silly subscriptions now. i own zbrush and so far still get upgrades so this isn't as appealing for me but i do use zbrush alot and if i didn't own it this would be more appealing.

With a student license maya is free for a year at a time and c4d is 9.99/month for c4d+zbrush for 6mos at a time. I use other software with messy UI (menu, hotkey, shortcuts) such as zbrush and found it just always takes lots of time but once you get over that hump you got it. I've been messing with blender in spare time off and on since 2005 just to follow its development and have always hated the UI but it has come a very long way and if my brain wasnt wired for maya UI i'd be all about it. back then blender want competitive and definitely not good for rigging/animating and rendering of course even maya rendering back then (mental ray) let something to be desired. Have been using maya since it was owned by Alias some time around 2005. Use the one you know and or the one that is right for the job, but the standard and physical engines are NOT garbage and can be the better choice in many situations. Exclude certain objects from lights in cycles? Can't be done. Controllable light fall off in cycles? Can't be done. Yes those three engines can give great looks with one push of a button, but you pay for it in noise and you can get into trouble when clients get specific and ask for something that needs more than a button push. Again if you know what you are doing, you can do look/dev without the progressive noisyness of RS, cycles or octane with the built in tools. (2 seconds a frame in standard vs 40 seconds a frame in cycles vs 2min a frame in Arnold on a job I just finished.)Īnd the myth that there is no real time render (IPR) is just not true. Image Infoīoth physical and standard are excellent render engines and depending on the scene can be faster than waiting for all the noise to clean up with RS or cycles or octane.
